Sacred Stops Along the Way

Tarboche (Prayer Flag Square): A revered site of the Saga Dawa Festival, where pilgrims gather to raise prayer flagpoles in celebration of Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and passing into nirvana.

Morning: Ascent to Dolma La Pass

Begin with a steady 4-kilometer ascent, climbing toward an altitude of around 5,430 m. As the sun rises, enjoy breathtaking views of the northwestern face of Mount Kailash, glowing softly in the early morning light.

Continue another 2 kilometers to reach Dolma La Pass (5,630 m), the highest point of the kora. Ascending this sacred pass is regarded as a profound spiritual achievement in Tibetan Buddhism, symbolizing the cleansing of past sins and the renewal of one’s soul. Prayer flags flutter endlessly in the wind, carrying pilgrims’ wishes and blessings across the plateau. From the top, enjoy awe-inspiring views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

Descent: Gauri Kund & Glaciers

After crossing Dolma La Pass, descend carefully to the serene Gauri Kund (Tuoji Cuo, Lake of Compassion, or Cibei Lake), its emerald-green waters shimmering beneath the surrounding peaks. According to belief, a dip here symbolizes the cleansing of a lifetime’s sins. Nearby, observe the thick glaciers on Mount Kailash’s northwestern slope, adding to the raw and sacred beauty of the landscape.

Afternoon: Toward Zutulpuk Monastery

Continue descending into the valley below the southeastern foot of Mount Kailash, where the trail gradually softens. Arrive at Zutulpuk Monastery (Dzutripuk Monastery, Zūnzhū Sì, or Zǔchǔ Sì), set amid peaceful grasslands. This tranquil site is associated with Milarepa’s meditation cave, offering a gentle and reflective end to a demanding day. You may encounter small wild animals along the way, adding life to the quiet plateau scenery.
